Biography

  • Jake Saner is a Cinematographer and Filmmaker living in New York. Raised by a printmaker and performance artist in Chicago, his artistic exploration was nurtured from birth. While attending the small community school his parents created, he discovered his love for moving image through animation. At age 9 he created his first stop motion film which toured the children's film festival circuit winning several awards. Years later, still inspired by cinema, he attended NYU's Tisch film program where he began to focus his work around the camera, receiving the Arri Volker Bahnemann Award for Cinematography upon graduation in 2013. It was there he met Sarah Elizabeth Mintz, who became a long time collaborator.

In 2016 he shot director Kaz Firpo's 'Refuge', which premiered at SXSW. In 2019 he premiered Bassam Tariq's 'Ghosts of Sugarland' at Sundance which won the Short Film Special Jury Award for Nonfiction, was shortlisted for an Academy Award for best short doc and was acquired by Netflix. In 2019, Saner shot, edited and co-directed Wale Oyejide's short After Migration: Calabria, which is streaming on the Criterion Channel. He has shot content for Vogue, Nowness, i-D, Adidas, Absolut, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Free People, Michelin, Equinox, Piaget, Playstation and more. In 2020 he began production of Sarah Elizabeth Mintz's narrative feature 'Good Girl Jane' which is set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival in June (2022).

His work is fluid and intuitive, generally utilizing handheld camerawork and naturalistic lighting with a focus on capturing truth, heart and authenticity.
