She is the sister-in-law of David Oxley Thompson, born on January 15, 1957 in Berkeley, California and actress, Jill Church; Dinah Vaughn Thompson Sappia, born on December 6, 1960 in Los Angeles, California; and Amanda Thompson, born July 30, 1962 in Berkeley, California.

She is the mother of Sarah-Leah Thompson, Samuel Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Tzipporah Thompson, and Deborah Thompson.

She is the granddaughter-in-law of actress Gloria Stuart and screenwriter Arthur Sheekman.

Ella Thompson is the wife and longtime producer partner of Benjamin Stuart Thompson.
