James Naismith was born on 6 November 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. He was married to Florence Kincaid Naismith and Maude Sherman Naismith. He died on 28 November 1939 in Lawrence, Kansas, USA.
Invented the game of basketball in 1891 at Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented the game to keep athletes in shape by playing a game inside, not subject to the harsh New England winters.
