Biography

Bobby Sands was born on March 9, 1954 in Rathcoole, Co. Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was a writer, known for The Rising of the Moon (2002). He died on May 5, 1981 in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK.

It was he who came up with the slogan 'Tiocfaidh ar la' (Our day will come) which is now a motto of the republican movement in Ireland.

He died after being on hunger strike for 66 days.

He was the first of ten republican prisoners to die while on hunger strike in the Maze prison.

He was elected MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone while on hunger strike.

He is portrayed by Michael Fassbender in Hunger (2008).

The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then we'll see the rising of the moon.

Everyone, Republican or otherwise has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small, no one is too old or too young to do something.
