- Selected by Edmonton Oilers 111th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.
- Won 3 Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers (1987, 1988, 1990)
- "Scored" for the Calgary Flames when, trying to make a pass, his skate banked the puck off goalie Grant Fuhr's leg and into the net. The Flames made the gift hold up, and beat the Oilers 3-2 to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. Ironically, Smith was the Flames' Assistant Coach in 1997-1998, and played for them from 1998 - 2000. - Traded to the Chicago Blackhawks by the Edmonton Oilers for Dave Manson and Chicago's 3rd round choice in 1992 the Entry Draft (2 October 1991)
