Dan Weldon started out as a painter until the YBA at his art school (Goldsmiths 1985) killed that idea, and he turned to film instead.
He began his film career as an American marine in Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and then became a runner, driver, wardrobe, production assistant, and 3/2nd AD in feature films, music videos, and commercials. He also made odd little short films and wrote screenplays.
After finishing his first film 'My Macondo' - an award-winning documentary for C4 and the National Film Board of Canada that screened at many festivals, including Havana, Bombay, Cinéma du Réel and BFI London - he co-founded a production company called Tall Stories with friend and producer Ben Woolford.
Dan hoped that at Tall Stories, he'd continue to make his own work but he ended up developing and producing other people's films, which he liked doing, so that was okay. The nearest he got to making his own stuff was writing screenplays, which he loved.
Tall Stories produced critically acclaimed films (shorts and features) by emerging, first-time writers and directors. Films produced included Andrew Kotting's' Edinburgh-winning 'Gallivant', Jasmin Dizdar's Cannes-winning 'Beautiful People', and Ntshaveni Wa Luruli's Silver Bear at Berlin film, 'The Wooden Camera'.
As a screenwriter, Dan was commissioned and wrote spec screenplays for Stephen Frears, Kathleen Kennedy at Amblin Pictures, Channel Four Films, Tariq Ali at Bandung Productions, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner at Working Title, and Scala Productions for Academy Award winner Chris Menges.
Dan made a short film, 'Maisie's Catch' for C4 and the Arts Council (a film with one incredible moment in it, apparently).
In 2008, he wrote and produced Nicolas Roeg's last film 'Puffball' starring Kelly Reilly, Miranda Richardson, Rita Tushingham and Donald Sutherland.
Currently (2024), Dan has been filming and editing an epic feature-length documentary 'The ADHD Chronicles: All About Everything, The State of Things, all the time, all at once, in Five Uneasy Chapters' a 90 min film documentary and musical (with Tourettes). 5 people who have overcome terrible things and make do, creativity. The film includes an interview just before her death with Dan's mother Fay Weldon.
Dan is currently (2024) restoring his first film from the original film negative, My Macondo (which features a rare and fascinating interview with Gabrielle Garcia Marquez), with a view to a re-release with an accompanying novella in 2025.
Dan teaches divergent filmmaking to anyone who'll listen at the Northern Film School in Leeds, Yorkshire.
