Biography

Roberta Alexander was born on March 3, 1949 in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA. She was an actress, known for The Metropolitan Opera Presents (1977), Angels in America: The Opera (2004) and Hello I Must Be Going (2012). She was married to Siebe Riedstra and Edo de Waart. She died on October 14, 2025 in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.

Opera singer (soprano).

She was a teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Codarts in Rotterdam, but also taught in master classes around the world. Roberta had a strong commitment with the IVC in 's Hertogenbosch where she was a jury member several times.

Daughter of two musical parents.

In November 2020, she was awarded the Edison Classical Oeuvre Prize.

She came to the Netherlands after her first years in the USA (at Central State University in Wilberforce (Ohio) and Michigan University in Ann Arbor) and in London in 1972 to complete her education at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She then settled permanently in the Netherlands.
