Biography

Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda was born on July 26, 1939 in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. She was a director and art director, known for Sea of Roses (1978), Ovelha Negra, Uma Despedida de Solteiro (1974) and Xarabovalha (1978). She died on March 28, 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

She supervised the master's thesis in Communication and Culture at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where she was a professor, by Brazilian documentary filmmaker, journalist, and lawyer Augusto Amorim (José Augusto Amorim Guilherme da Silva), with whom she became friends, about the cultural identity of Brazilian cinema.

Writer and cultural critic Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda, 83, was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) on April 20, 2023, occupying chair number 30, which had been vacant since the death of writer Nélida Piñon in December 2022. Heloísa became the 10th woman elected to the ABL, this time with 34 votes out of a possible 37.
