Biography

Angelie García Ortiz

Biography

  • Angelie M. García Ortiz was born on April 11 1998 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. The award winning filmmaker has been distinguished for her screenwriting, directing, producing and editing skills. Her most prominent work is the short 400 Petals. The award winning film was selected in more than 10 festivals from countries like India, Nigeria, México and the United States.

García Ortiz is a student at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. In December 2020, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from her Bachelor's Degree in Audiovisual Communications. At the Río Piedras Campus, García Ortiz developed the documentary Comadrona: An Empowered Birth (2020) and the narrative 400 Petals (2020). On both projects, she was screenwriter, director, co-producer and co-editor. García Ortiz also worked as a gaffer on short films like Right of Reply (2019) and Intermittent (2020).

The filmmaking areas that she enjoys most are screenwriting, directing and lighting. As a screenwriter, García Ortiz incorporates personal experiences into her stories. Journalistic techniques are also part of her process: investigating and sometimes interviewing people on the topics she wants to write about. As a director, she highlights the importance of communicating a story with more than acting and cinematography. She promotes the intentional, meaningful and harmonious use of color, set design, lighting and music. Some filmmakers that inspire García Ortiz are Jennifer Kent, Pedro Almodóvar and Krzysztof Kieslowski.

In October 2020, García Ortiz and other peers at Río Piedra's School of Communications founded Producciones 1019. The film production cooperative aims to create a workshop for both experienced and amateur filmmakers.
