Biography

Benny Powell was born on March 1, 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. He is known for Quartet (1981), School Daze (1988) and Adventures in Jazz (1949). He died on June 26, 2010 in New York City, New York, USA.

He became a professional musician in 1944 at 14-years-old and joined Lionel Hampton's big band in 1948.

He taught jazz education since 1994 at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

He is survived by his daughter, Demitra Powell Clay; a sister Elizabeth Powell McCrowey; and two grandchildren.

Trombonist who was a member if Count Basie big band. He also performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra to Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
