He joined NASCAR in 1964 after racing late models in the Midwest for almost a decade. He finished second in his second career start then joined the Charlotte based Holman-Moody team, for which he ran 52 races in 1965. In 1971 he and Eddie Pagan formed Hutcherson-Pagan building race cars used by drivers such as Darrell Waltrip and A.J. Foyt.
