- Hugo Ateo (Ateo rhymes with Mateo) was born in Mexico City and began acting at age 6. He received extensive acting training at various schools including the prestigious National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) in Mexico. At age 19 Hugo was awarded a full scholarship to the Russian Acting School in Mexico where he completed his education.
He has performed in theatre most of his life in various amateur and professional productions and after a brief stint at the National Theatre Company, Hugo was invited to join one of the largest television production companies in Mexico, TV Azteca. As part of the main cast in four different programs, he accrued more than 1000 aired episodes.
Hugo moved to Canada in 2004, where he continued acting in movies and television. He currently (2022) resides in Vancouver, Canada.

- While taping a scene in the series "Catalina y Sebastian", a scene in which Hugo's Character, Macario was going to take a dip in a river, the director jokingly said: "Then you take it all off, and you jump in the river". Unaware it had been a joke, when the director called for action, Hugo took all his clothes off and jumped in the river to the surprise and laughter of everyone on location that day. The director decided to keep the scene as it was, becoming the first time that full back male nudity was shown in Mexican soap operas. After that, because of the buzz it caused, Hugo's derriere became a weekly fixture during the rest of the series' run.
- When he was cast as Macario in the soap opera "Catalina y Sebastian", as the villain's right hand, Hugo had only done theatre and was completely unfamiliar of how television worked. He taped 90 episodes of the series' 120 episodes, but only asked the producer Antulio Jimenez Pons why he had not been credited during the wrap party, so to this day he is uncredited.
- The first role he played was Peter Pan, staged with children from the street in which he lived in Mexico City. Also in the play were Jorge Michel Grau, who is now a successful movie director, and his brother Octavio Michel, who is a successful Actor and theatre director.
