- After the death of Franjo Tudjman in December 1999, he was elected second president of Croatia in the second round of the 2000 presidential elections held on February 7, 2000 and was also reelected for a second term on this position in the second round of the 2005 elections held on January 16, 2005.
- He graduated from gymnasium in Pozega and Law Faculty of the University of Zagreb. After becoming a lawyer, he worked in his native town Orahovica and Nasice, finished compulsory military service and became a municipal judge after passing judicial exams.
