Victoria was born in Malta, hence her second name, "Melita". Her father, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Alfred was stationed there as an officer in the Royal Navy. Her mother was Duchess Maria Edinburgh of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II and Marie of Hesse.

Niece of Czar Aleksandr III, King Edward VII, Princess Royal Victoria, Helena of Schleswig-Holstein, Duchess of Argyll Princess Louise, Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught, Prince Leopold of Duke of Albany, Grand Duchess Alice, and Princess Henry of Battenberg.
