Biography

After a few false starts, including a spell in the group Spice (forerunner to Uriah Heap!), Barry's career as a performer took off with a change of colour and his fourth single 'Dancin' (on a Saturday Night)' which he co-wrote with 'Lynsey de Paul'. Barry's recording of the song went on to become a massive hit all over Europe and also in Australia. In North America, two cover versions hit the charts with Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids scoring in the US and Bond reaching the Canadian Top 20. Today, Dancin' is considered one of the classic hit songs of the 70s.

Other hits followed in the form of the stomping 'Do You Wanna Dance', 'School Love', 'Miss Hit and Run' and 'Hot Shot', the latter three again crediting Lynsey de Paul, his major writing partner in the 70s. Although the hits eventually dried up, Barry continued to find success writing songs for others including the quirky 'I Eat Cannibals' for Toto Coelo, and more recently 'Escaping' - a U.K. #3 in 1996 for Dina Carroll. Barry also made a name for himself as a very accomplished producer, working with the likes of soul group Heatwave, Bananarama, Cheryl Lynn, Dana and Louise. In 1995, he founded the music company Connect, and now writes film scores and TV themes as well as pop songs.
