It isn't much of a balancing act, really. In fact, the two often complement each other, because the exposure and relationships you build on professional sets carry over to the indie work and viceversa. The guaranteed paycheck from a studio is also a nice way to balance the gamble of shooting your own amateur content that could go viral or flop completely.
