Mini bio

  • Andre Kirk Agassi (born April 29, 1970) is an American retired professional tennis player and former World No. 1, who was one of the game's most dominant players from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s. Generally considered by critics and fellow players to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Agassi had been called the greatest service returner in the history of the game. Described by the BBC upon his retirement as "perhaps the biggest worldwide star in the sport's history", Agassi compiled performances that, along with his unorthodox apparel and attitude, saw him cited as one of the most charismatic players in the history of the game. As a result, he is credited for helping to revive the popularity of tennis during the 1990s.

  • Andre Agassi is an American retired professional tennis player and former world No. 1 whose career spanned from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.

Agassi is an eight-time Grand Slam champion and a Atlanta 1996: Games of the XXVI Olympiad (1996) gold medalist in singles, as well as being a runner-up in seven other Grand Slam tournaments.

During the Open Era, Agassi was the first male player to win four Australian Open titles, a record that was later surpassed by Novak Djokovic when he won his fifth title in 2015, and then by Roger Federer in 2017. Agassi is one of five male singles players to achieve the Career Grand Slam in the Open Era and one of eight in history, the first of two to achieve the Career Golden Slam (Career Grand Slam and Olympic Gold Medal, the other being Rafael Nadal), and the only man to win the Career Golden Slam and the ATP Tour World Championships.

Agassi was the first male player to win all four Grand Slam tournaments on three different surfaces (hard, clay and grass), and the last American male to win both the French Open (in 1999) and the Australian Open (in 2003). He also won 17 ATP Masters Series titles and was part of the winning Davis Cup teams in 1990, 1992 and 1995. Agassi reached the world No. 1 ranking for the first time in 1995.

Agassi retired from professional tennis on September 3, 2006, after losing in the third round of the US Open to Benjamin Becker. He has been married to fellow tennis player Steffi Graf since 2001.

  • Although they had already divorced, Agassi cooperated with Brooke Shields request to obtain an annulment so that she could marry Chris Henchy in the Catholic Church.
  • He admitted in 2009 that the famous long blonde hair he sported in the early nineties was actually a wig he wore to cover his hair loss. He also blamed it for costing him his first Grand Slam final due to being so worried about it falling off.
  • 1996 Summer Olympics champion. He and wife Steffi Graf are the first male and female players in tennis history, respectively, to win all four majors singles titles and an Olympic gold medal.
  • Is one of only 6 players to have won more than 800 matches.
  • Two months after he resigned as Agassi's business manager in October 2008, former boyhood friend Perry Rogers sued Steffi Graf for $50,000 in management fees.

Quotes

  • I consider myself quite boring, to be honest.
  • [about he and longtime rival Pete Sampras] If either of us woke up as the other one, we would probably go back to sleep, praying it was a dream.
  • I've had those years where tennis hasn't been the top priority. There can be some regrets there, but I think that has saved me for the long run. I think my best tennis can still be ahead of me.
  • [on playing with wife Steffi Graf] She always wins. The problem is I can't always keep my eyes on the ball.
  • What makes something special is not just what you have to gain, but what you feel there is to lose.
