Born in Malaysia, Mickey Lai is an emerging filmmaker and graduate of the Met Film School in London, where she earned her Master of Film and TV Production. She is drawn to stories that explore the unspoken - diverse cultural values, mortality, and self-identity - often through intimate perspectives that touch the boundaries of society and reveal hidden tensions.
Her latest short film, WAShhh, won the Golden Leopard for Best International Short Film at the 77th Locarno Film Festival.
Her thesis short, The Cloud Is Still There, screened at Clermont-Ferrand, Busan, and Shanghai, and won the "Best Performance Award" at SeaShorts Film Festival 2020 in Malaysia as well as the "New Talent Award" at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth 2020 in Seattle.
Her documentary short, A Worm, Whatever Will Be, Will Be, won the Jury Award at SeaShorts Film Festival 2022 and was also selected by Taipei Golden Horse, SGIFF, Toronto Reel Asian, Jogja-NETPAC, and the Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival.
She is also an alumna of the Golden Horse Film Academy (2024) and Locarno Spring Academy (2025).
