Eddie Jordan hired Eddie Irvine for the last two races of the 1993 championship—Japan and Australia—seeking financial backing and knowledge of the Suzuka track. In his debut at the Japanese GP, the Northern Irishman started eighth and quickly jumped to fifth place. During the race, he stood out by overtaking the leader, Ayrton Senna, with a daring move on the outside to stay on the same lap as the leader. In the final laps, he hit the back of the car of Derek Warwick, finishing in 6th place and securing a point on his debut. After the race, irritated by the maneuver that nearly jeopardized the lead of the Brazilian three-time champion, Senna confronted Irvine about his reckless driving, but the rookie responded with irony until he was punched by the Brazilian. The fight did not escalate because people nearby stepped in to stop the altercation.

In the first race of the 1994 season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, Eddie Irvine was involved in a four-car collision on lap 35, including himself, Jos Verstappen (Benetton-Ford), Éric Bernard (Ligier-Renault) and Martin Brundle (McLaren-Peugeot). Initially, Irvine was fined $10,000 and suspended for one race. Jordan and Irvine appealed the decision, considering the penalty too severe, but the FIA rejected the appeal and increased the penalty to a three-race suspension, covering the Pacific, San Marino, and Monaco Grands Prix.

Irvine had always looked up to Ayrton Senna. He'd followed in his wheeltracks at Van Diemen in FF1600 and West Surrey Racing in F3, and at one stage his yellow helmet design was very close to Senna's.

Eddie Irvine joined Ferrari in 1996 after the Italian team paid a $5 million fine to release him from Jordan. The Northern Irish driver had just renewed his contract with Jordan for another two years, only six days before Ferrari's official announcement in September 1995. The transfer occurred because Irvine had a clause in his Jordan contract that allowed for its cancellation if the team received a $5 million compensation payment—a significant boost to the team's finances.
