Biography

Alina Montero is a film director and screenwriter. In the last ten years of her film career, she has mainly focused on the creation of advertising. She has written and directed ads, web series, documentaries and branded content.

In her pieces, fiction and reality mix: She likes to film in real homes with real people, but always using the cinematographic magic to enrich everything she does; this is why she defines her style as magical realism.

Throughout her career, she has directed celebrities like Eugenio Derbez and Carlos Rivera; and has worked with renowned directors of photography, such as Oscar winner Benjamin Echazarreta, and the cinematographer of Netflix's Chef's Table, Matt Chavez.

She has created international campaigns for companies such as Coca-Cola, Google, Toyota, Heinz-Kraft, McCormick, KFC, and Corona, amongst many others; and collaborated with global agencies like The Martin Agency, Grey, and Virtue, to mention a few.

Her commercials have been presented and reviewed on platforms like Shots and Adweek. She has been represented by multiple production companies, but most of her portfolio was filmed with the internationally multi-awarded The Maestros.

Her professional development as a writer and director began with two projects: White Water, a medium-length fiction film shot on the glaciers of the Iztaccihuatl volcano, elected in several film festivals across the world; and Chicza: Collective Ingredient, a short documentary filmed in the tropical jungle about sustainable chewing gum, which went viral as soon as it was published on Facebook, getting over 17 million views, 300K shares and 16K comments.

She studied communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana, where she specialized in cinema, and complemented her studies with courses and workshops in Mexico and abroad, having professors like Syd Field and Christopher Vogler.

Her father is film director Rafael Montero, so as a child, she grew up on the set and in the editing rooms, looking at storyboards and script pages. That is how her background as a storyteller began!

Her younger sister is the renowned cinematographer Leslie Montero.

Alina Montero is engaged to film composer Diego Westendarp, with whom she has widely collaborated in the creation of all kinds of audiovisual content throughout her career.
