- National councillor from 1991 to 1995, while from 1995 to 2007 she was a councilor to the States (where she served as chairman of the Health and Social Security Commission).
- After leaving the Council of States in 2007, Brunner retired permanently from political life.
- She was considered a prominent figure in Swiss feminism, icon and promoter of the first women's strike in 1991.
- She was also president of the Swiss Socialist Party from 2000 to 2004.
- She was a member of the Grand Council of Geneva from 1981 to 1990, before entering the Parliament in Bern.
