Mitchell Wilson, a National Press Photographer of the Year recipient,
is well known for his cinematic eloquence, impressionistic historical
re-creations and striking juxtaposition of photojournalism and visual
metaphor. He has traveled the world capturing time and place in stills
and motion. His striking photos are collected in books, and along with
his multi-media pieces, have also been exhibited in galleries. In 2010,
Wilson completed When Worlds Collide about the origins of Hispanic
Culture for PBS. Other recent favorite projects include Andrew Jackson:
Good, Evil and the Presidency and the four-hour PBS series The New
Heroes, shot on location in India, Brazil, Paraguay and Zambia, hosted
by Robert Redford. His cinematography for the series was nominated for
a National Emmy award. Other projects include the four-hour PBS series
about the history of the Jews, The Kingdom of David, shot on location
in Israel, Tunisia, Greece and Morocco, The Meth Epidemic for Frontline
and the four-hour PBS history of aviation project Chasing the Sun, much
of its dramatic aerial photography recreated in vintage aircraft. He
served as Co-Director and Cinematographer for the three-hour Woodrow
Wilson Presidential special, and The Duel, both for The American
Experience, PBS' preeminent history series.
His impressive list of PBS credits also includes the eight-hour, award-winning series The Great War and the Shaping of the Twentieth Century, the four-hour series The Human Quest, Intimate Strangers, China: the Last Millennium, Visions of the Future, The Last Outcasts, The Artists Next Door, Songs of the City and The Works. His creative talents have been widely showcased on ABC, NBC, CBS and HBO. Wilson's work has been recognized with Primetime Emmys, both the duPont Columbia Award and the Peabody for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism, two International Documentary Association Awards for Best Documentary Series, the Producers Guild of America Kodak Vision Award, the Ohio State Award, the Indian Film Festival Audience Choice award, Press Club honors from UP and API and multiple Los Angeles Emmys. Wilson began his career as a Combat Cameraman and underwater photographer in the elite Combat Camera Group of the U.S. Navy. He is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.
