- Smith became a central voice in the DV filmmaking revolution through his provocative writings, experimental videos, and digital effects for dozens of independent feature films including director Frank Grow's groundbreaking debut Love God (1997) and Todd Solondz's controversial Happiness (1998). His own directorial efforts include pioneering efforts in 360º video, web cinema, and interactive storytelling. His short film, Carny Tales (2002), won the Audience Choice Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He made his award-winning feature film debut with _Charlie the Ox (2004).
The author of several books on moviemaking, including Composition in Film, FireWire Filmmaking, Making iMovies, and The Film 100 (a ranking of the most influential people in the history of cinema), he also edited The DV Filmmaker's Handbook.
The former publisher of RES: The Magazine of Digital Filmmaking and a featured columnist on the Adobe.com website, Smith still writes extensively about the emerging technologies and techniques used by today's digital filmmakers. He has moderated panels and seminars on DV production at the Sundance, Cannes, and Los Angeles International Film Festivals and taught digital filmmaking at the UCLA School of Design.
