Biography

Ellen Thompson was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in central New Jersey and central Pennsylvania by her mother, bestselling author Victoria Thompson, and her father, Jim Thompson, a television news anchorman who later worked in radio and as a college professor. Ellen earned a BFA in Drama from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and she moved from New York to Los Angeles in 2003. She graduated from Second City Hollywood's Conservatory program for improv and sketch comedy in 2009 and earned a Paralegal Certificate with Distinction from UCLA Extension in 2018.

A sitcom pilot Ellen wrote won Acclaim Scripts TV Pilot/MOW competition and had two staged readings at comedy festivals in Los Angeles, and her first screenplay was in the Top 15% for the Nicholls Fellowship. She wrote and produced an award-winning comedic music video, "Pay Attention (For Lyme Disease Prevention)," and she wrote the book and lyrics for the original dark comedy, "Lyme Disease: The Musical," which premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles in June 2022. The script was a finalist in the ScreenCraft Stage Play Writing Competition, and the production was nominated for two Robby Awards and five Broadway World Los Angeles Awards, earning runner-up for the Broadway World Los Angeles Award for Best New Play or Musical. A video of the production is available to watch on Youtube, and the original cast recording is streaming on most music platforms.

When Ellen’s mother was battling cancer in 2024, Victoria realized she wasn’t going to be able to finish the novel she was currently writing, so she asked if one of her daughters would finish it for her. After Victoria passed away, Ellen finished writing "City of Promises," the eighth novel in Victoria's Counterfeit Lady Novels series, and it will be published by Berkley in July 2026.

In 2025, Ellen shot a documentary entitled, "The Blue Group," that follows up with her college freshman year acting class thirty years later and includes vintage VHS footage. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their pets, and she advocates for Lyme and other tick-borne disease awareness.
