  • Maya Bastian is an award winning filmmaker and artist with roots in conflict journalism. Her work has been supported by Netflix, HBO, UN IOM, CBC and the Canadian Film Centre. Her short drama 'Air Show' received national press for its look at refugee reactions to militarized air shows. Her most recent film TIGRESS was produced by Blackout Media and India's JAR Pictures and participated at Cannes Court Metrage 2021. TIGRESS has played at festivals worldwide including Festival De Nouveau Cinema, London Indian Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival and Reykjavik Film Festival. It premiered on CBC in 2020. Maya is in development on her arthouse horror feature 'The Devil's Tears' with Karma Films (Donkeyhead, ARRAY) and Fae Pictures (In Flames, Cannes '23), and is co-writing and directing a paranormal mystery series set in 1970's Southeast Asia for Reflector Entertainment. She is an alumni of TIFF Series Accelerator for her comedy series 'How To Be Brown" and the 1497 Features Lab as well as a finalist in the Breaking Through the Lens/Chopard Development Grant. Her work frequently explores the trauma related to displacement and migration.
