Trilingual filmmaker and director (French, English, Arabic) with a distinctive cinema verite approach that blends intimate, poetic storytelling with immersive documentary techniques. An official collaborator with Newcastle University since 2012, Helali has developed a body of work deeply rooted in the textures of everyday life while exploring social and cultural narratives across borders. In 2025, he founded Cineya, an innovative film and photography training center that operates across France and Luxembourg, further extending his commitment to visual storytelling education.
As a member of the prestigious Lab Doc / Méditalents selection committee in 2023, Helali helped identify and nurture emerging documentary talent from across the Mediterranean region. His recent film "Looking For Zeeshan" (2024) garnered international attention, including a featured interview with BBC in 2024, highlighting his evolving artistic vision and commitment to authentic storytelling.
Helali's collaborative practice extends across diverse institutions including the Hassockfield detention center in England, L'Après M cultural center in Marseille, and various socio-cultural organizations in both France and the UK. His work consistently explores the intersection of identity, memory, and place through a humanistic lens that captures raw authenticity while maintaining artistic sophistication.
Notable works include "Let Us Keep The Keys" (2025), a feature film documenting how Kamel Guemari and local residents transformed a closed McDonald's in Marseille's northern districts into a self-managed community hub, challenging corporate power through grassroots solidarity. Other significant films include "Making Kanaval" (2023), "Algeria 2096, Someone Else's Memory" (in post-production), and the earlier "Boxing Clever" (2010) and the making-of documentary for the feature "The Liability" starring Tim Roth and Talulah Riley (2012). Helali's approach combines traditional cinema vérité observation with contemporary visual techniques that create intimate connections between subjects and audiences, consistently revealing hidden truths within everyday experiences.
