Giannis Poulopoulos(1941-2020)

Giannis Poulopoulos was a celebrated Greek singer, composer, and lyricist, widely regarded as one of the most important voices in Greek popular music. Discovered in the early 1960s by Mikis Theodorakis, he quickly rose to prominence with landmark performances in I Geitonia ton Angelon and later through his collaboration with major composers such as Mimis Plessas, Stavros Kougioumtzis, and Giannis Spanos. His gentle style and emotional delivery made him a defining figure of the Neo Kyma movement and a beloved interpreter of romantic ballads. Poulopoulos also became closely associated with Greek cinema, performing memorable songs in films such as The Blue Beads from Greece (1967) and A Lady in Sirtaki Dance (1968), which cemented his image as the romantic singer with guitar and closed eyes. In 1969 he recorded O Dromos, a collaboration with Plessas and Lefteris Papadopoulos, which went on to become the best-selling album in Greek recording history and remains a milestone of Greek music. Known for his modest and private lifestyle, Poulopoulos avoided the spotlight in later years but left behind a vast body of work that continues to resonate across generations. Beyond his music, he published poetry and explored painting and engraving. Honored for his cultural contributions, he is remembered as one of the most enduring and influential voices of modern Greek song.
