Biography

  • Hubert van Herreweghen was born on February 16, 1920 in Pamel, Flanders, Belgium. He was a producer and writer, known for Poëzie in 625 lijnen (1955), De filosoof van Haeghem (1967) and Wacht tot hij opbelt (1981). He died on November 4, 2016 in Dilbeek, Flanders, Belgium.

Trivia

  • In 1961 he became head of the Drama Department at Flemish television, and among other things he brought the most watched and still legendary Flemish series Schipper to the screen alongside Mathilde. He would hold this position until his retirement.
  • In 1962 he received the Triennial State Prize for Poetry (now the Prize of the Flemish Community for Poetry).
  • From 1965 to 2000, for 36 years, he provided a selection of 50 poems for the Davidsfonds from the poetic annual production in magazines, nine issues with Jos De Haes, and from 1975 twenty-seven volumes with Willy Spillebeen, who continued the series from 2001 with Hugo Brems. The familiar title "Gedichten" (Poems) was and is a benchmark for poets and an important introduction to the most recent poetry for readers. Van Herreweghen is credited with having set the tone for this and maintaining it for years.
  • In 2015, seventy-two years after his poetry debut 'The Year of Remembrance', Hubert van Herreweghen returned to the spotlight on February 1 with 'De bulleman en de vogels', his latest collection of poems. At the age of almost 95, he was then the nestor of Flemish poetry.
  • After training as a teacher, he briefly worked in education and administration, but in 1944 he switched to journalism.
