Appointed Director of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2019. SHIN Chul set foot in the film industry with dreams of becoming a film director in an era where there were stifling restrictions on freedom of expression and worked on the production team for great masters of Korean cinema. Having experienced the harsh reality of the Korean film industry which was behind the times, he changed the course of his life to becoming a producer with the goal of helping the Korean film industry grow. Marriage Story is documented as the first Korean film to beat out summer Hollywood blockbusters at the box office. His success led to an influx of new talented individuals with fresh vision and corporate capital in the Korean film industry. He became a producer that brought about a new golden era for Korean cinema. He established Shincine Computer Graphics and was acknowledged as an innovator in Korean cinema as he was the first to implement CGI in a Korean film. Korean fantasy films such as Gumiho (Fox with Nine Tails) and Gingko Bed contributed to the development of CGI in Korean cinema later.
Director JANG Sun-Woo's Lies which caused a controversy was in competition at the Venice International Film Festival. He later produced My Sassy Girl, which ignited a "Sassy Girl" sensation all over Asia as well as South Korea, signaling the start of Hallyu or Korean Wave of films and enabled JUN Ji-hyun to secure international star status in the Asian market which continued right up to Kingdom. My Sassy Girl was also later remade in Hollywood. SHIN has a firm reputation as the producer who enriched the previously barren landscape of Korean films by bringing them to the attention of the audience and enabling them to step on to the world stage. His efforts to communicate with the world with Korean films is ongoing. He recently established a new company for a project to revive a legendary robot character in Korea and he has been developing a unique SF movie series. He is also an adjunct professor at Korea National University of Arts.
