Karla Sofía Gascón was born on March 31, 1972 in Madrid, Spain. She is an actress and writer, known for Emilia Pérez (2024), We Are the Nobles (2013) and The Lord of the Skies (2013).

First transgender woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award: Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for the film Emilia Pérez (2024).
Grew up into the town of Alcobendas (Madrid), as also did actress and fellow Oscar nominee Penélope Cruz. They are the only two Spanish actresses who have ever had Best Actress nominations.
For her performance in Emilia Pérez (2024), she became the first out trans performer nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy), for the Screen Actors' Guild Awards in a solo category (Best Female Actor in a Leading Role), for the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress, and for the BAFTA Film Award for Best Leading Actress.
She and her co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Adriana Paz and Selena Gomez were each awarded Knights of the National Order of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture on October 3, 2024 for their services to the film industry.
First out trans performer to receive an acting award at the Cannes Film Festival. Gascón shared the Best Actress award with much of her female co-stars from Emilia Pérez (2024).

I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work. And I cannot renounce a nomination either because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone, I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.
They have dedicated themselves to searching, to put together all the things that I had said at a time that I had written -most of which are false ... most of them I don't even recognize that I wrote them and they put them all together and so it seems that she is a very bad person and we remove her just when we can do the most damage, right in the in the voting period.
What have I done in my life? What have I done? I haven't killed a single fly. When I have a spider in my house I put a little glass on it so as not to kill it and take it out to the street.
But for someone to think that ... I have ever insulted a person because of their skin color, I do not allow that to anyone, to anyone.
