Arvind Rathod was an Indian actor known for his work in Gujarati cinema, Hindi films, television, and theatre. He was particularly known for portraying negative and character roles in Gujarati films. Rathod was born in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. His father was a tailor. He developed an interest in acting during his school and college years and later pursued a career in theatre and films. Before entering the film industry, he worked as a photojournalist.
Rathod began his acting career in Gujarati theatre with the play Mota Gharni Vahu, directed by F. R. Irani. He later moved to Bombay after being brought there by Vinod Jani for the Gujarati play Preet Piyu Ne Panetar. He made his Hindi film debut with a small role as a photographer in Mera Naam Joker (1970), directed by Raj Kapoor. He later appeared in Hindi films including Kora Kagaz (1974), Agneepath (1990) and Khuda Gawah (1992).
Rathod worked extensively in Gujarati cinema. His notable films include Jesal Toral (1971), Janamteep (1974), Bhadar Tara Vehata Paani (1976), Ganga Sati (1979), Kanku Ni Kimat (1983), Lohibhini Choondani (1986), Kanya Viday (1986), Mehandi Rang Lagyo (1997) and Tension Thai Gayu (2018). His portrayal of Jetha in Bhadar Tara Vehata Paani was one of his notable performances in Gujarati cinema.
He was also active in Gujarati theatre and appeared in plays including Mukhavato, Shikast, Mahayatra, Babasaheb, Ghatana-2003, 11 Kalak 23 Minit and Ek Sapnu Badu Shaitani. He also directed the play Mujhe Ajwalan Jaaye. Rathod appeared in more than 250 films across Gujarati and Hindi cinema and more than 70 plays during his career. He also appeared in television and was nominated for an Indian Telly Award for Best Actor in 2006 for his role in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham.
Rathod died in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, at the age of 80. He had retired from active professional work before his death.
