Biography

Joe Lonie started his career in film as bassist, co-songwriter and music video director for kiwi chart toppers Supergroove. He went on to do more than 60 videos for many of NZ's greatest recording artists (Bic Runga, Shihad, The Finn Brothers, The Exponents, Brooke Fraser, Goodshirt, Liam Finn) and won many awards in the process. For over 10 years Lonie has worked as a commercials director for Flying Fish. Highlights include Grabber for Playstation, The Passengers for Ford and Don't Feed the Ducks for Goodman Fielder, which picked up a Gold Lion at Cannes. In 2012, Lonie wrote and directed his debut short film Honk If You're Horny. The film enjoyed an excellent run on the festival circuit. It screened in Melbourne, Seattle, Palm Springs, NZ, San Diego, San Francisco, Miami, Las Vegas, New York, Italy, Brisbane, Barcelona and Cleveland, picking up some awards along the way. Honk If You're Horny won Best Short Script, Best Actor and Best Short Film at the NZ film awards in 2012, as well as Best Actor, Best Director and Best Film at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival in 2013. In 2013, Lonie directed his first web series, The Factory for Robin Scholes and Kila Kokonut Krew. At present he is in post-production for his follow-up short film, Shout at the Ground. Shout at the Ground is a semi-autobiographical piece based on Lonie's experiences in the early, formative stages of Supergroove.
