Alex is the son of Dr. Alan and Nancy Katz. He has a brother, Ari Katz.
He is married to Jessica Katz, formerly Jessica Rubinstein, who is the
daughter of actor John Rubinstein and Judith West and the sister of
actor Michael Weston. Alex and Jessica have a son, Charlie Alan Katz
and a daughter, Samantha Alina Katz.
Alex received his undergraduate degree from Connecticut College and his Master's degree in film editing from The American Film Institute.
