Biography

Álvaro Guzmán Bastida is Spanish-born, Brooklyn-based writer and filmmaker whose work is centered around issues of migration, social inequality, labor, memory, and identity. His short films have garnered awards and nominations across the globe, including the Havana Film Festival, the Filmfest Osnabrück, the NY Latino Film Festival, the Oscar-qualifying Cleveland International Film Festival and the Goya-qualifying Avilés Acción and the FESCIGU, where he won top prizes. He is currently developing a short film, as well as two features, one narrative and the other documentary and has also written a television pilot and two additional feature screenplays. Before becoming a writer/director, he worked as a journalist, non-fiction writer and documentary film producer in two Netflix Original series, as well as for Al Jazeera English. He is pursuing his MFA in Screenwriting/ Directing at Columbia University, on a fellowship from the La Caixa Foundation.
