Sammy Winward was born and raised in Bolton and is best known for portraying the character of Katie Sugden in Emmerdale Farm (1972) for 14 years. She has recently starred as Sonia Sutcliffe in the award winning ITV series The Long Shadow (2023) and as Cheryl in the upcoming series of Sky One's Brassic (2019) as well as an appearance on BBC's Mastermind for which her chosen specialist subject was Anne Boleyn.

Her Emmerdale Farm (1972) character Katie Sugden became the 21st woman on the soap opera to give birth and the 1st character on any British soap opera to act as a surrogate. Katie had a baby boy (played by an unknown baby) for her employers Grayson (Christopher Villiers) and Perdita Sinclair (Georgia Slowe), born on 22 July 2008.

Was 9 months pregnant with her daughter Mia Winward Dunn when she went on maternity leave from Emmerdale Farm (1972).

Returned to work 8 months after giving birth to her daughter Mia Winward Dunn in order to resume filming Emmerdale Farm (1972).
