- On January 23, 1987, he was scheduled to appear before a federal judge to face charges of bribery, conspiracy to commit fraud, and five counts of mail fraud. If he was convicted, he faced up to 55 years in prison, a fine of up to $300,000, and the loss of his position in the state government.
