New York-born Burton began her career as a child dancer, performed on Broadway and, after relocating to Hollywood, danced in a few films. When her dance career slowed in the '60s, she began working for an agent and then became an independent agent herself. She helped launch the careers of child actors River Phoenix, Henry Thomas and others.

Iris Burton started out on the Broadway stage as a child dancer; she soon moved to Hollywood, where she appeared as a dancer in movies until the 1960s, when she became an agent, specializing in child actors. Among her clients were Henry Thomas, Adam Rich, Candace Cameron Bure and Kirk Cameron. She discovered Joaquin Phoenix, River Phoenix and their sisters Summer Phoenix and Rain Phoenix singing for spare change on a sidewalk in Westwood, California. She was once married to actor and director Sidney Miller and was the mother of Barry Miller.
