Biography

  • Andrew Shaw was a New Zealand television executive, director, producer and former presenter, widely respected for his lifelong contribution to local broadcasting.

Born in Manchester, England, Shaw moved to New Zealand with his family while still at school. He began his television career in the mid-1970s as the host of the children's programme Here's Andy (later Hey Hey It's Andy), before shifting into directing and producing roles.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, he directed well-known music and culture programmes including Radio with Pictures and A Drop of Kulcha, and produced major national events such as the New Zealand Telethon. He went on to become a key figure at TVNZ, serving as Director of Entertainment Programming and later as General Manager of Commissioning, Production and Acquisitions.

In 2001, Shaw left TVNZ to become Chief Operating Officer at South Pacific Pictures, where he played a role in developing New Zealand Idol. He returned to TVNZ in 2007, eventually becoming Deputy Director of Content before stepping down in 2020.

Shaw continued to support the industry through roles such as serving on the board of NZ On Air. He was recognised as a "Television Legend" at the 2020 New Zealand Television Awards and named an "Industry Champion" by SPADA in 2024.

Andrew Shaw died in May 2025 after a battle with cancer, aged 68.
