Biography

  • Vishnu Shyam is an Indian film music composer from Kerala, best known for the song "Roohe" from Neru (2024) and "Vellai Poove" and "Illavenal Poove" from Mirage. Born in Kannur, Kerala, he began singing as a child and went on to study Carnatic music before teaching himself keyboard and drums through his school orchestra. At eighteen, he moved to Chennai to train under veteran composer Vidyasagar, his idol since a young age, spending over nine years as his apprentice. The experience became a defining influence on his approach to film scoring. Shyam typically composes a film's theme or a lead character's musical motif before shooting begins, working closely with directors to build a film's sound from the ground up, an approach he used on Mohanlal-starrer Neru, where his theme track went on to influence the film's climax. He made his debut composing background music for Nonsense (2019) and later took on his first full music-direction role with Kooman, on which he also sang the track "Irulkkannumay." His other credits include Roslin, Valathu Vasathe Kallan, and Nunakkuzhi. He has worked with Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal, and collaborated with actors including Asif Ali and Basil Joseph, as well as playback singers Karthik, K. S. Chithra, and many more. Shyam divides his time between Kerala and North Carolina, USA, and continues to work across both film and independent music.
