  • Lech Kaczynski was a Polish politician and lawyer. He co-founded with his twin brother the political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc and served as its first president from 2001 to 2003. Kaczynski held several significant positions, including President of the Supreme Audit Office (1992-1995), Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General (2000-2001), and Mayor of Warsaw (2002-2005). In 2005, he was elected President of Poland, a role he held until his untimely death in 2010 by Smolensk air disaster.

  • He, his wife, and 94 others died when their plane was attempting to land in a thick fog. Poland's army chief, central bank governor, and MPs were among the victims. Russian media reports said the pilots ignored advice from air traffic control to divert to another airport. (10 April 2010).
