Biography

Guy Bernaert wrote many radio plays that were broadcast in the Netherlands and Flanders. He contributed to the Flemish Public Broadcasting Service on long-running series of radio dramas with daily episodes.

In 1998, together with Luk Van Brussel, he received the ANV-Visser-Neerlandia Drama Prize for "Slotgevallen". The jury awarded this work for the original manner and the humorously sustained style of the chronicle of life at a castle in the year 999, in which the "fin de siècle" atmosphere of 1999 is satirized in a fascinating and radio-fully developed way.

Bernaert worked also as screenwriter on well-known Flemish television productions such as "Alfa papa tango", "De kaperbrief", "Thuis", and "Windkracht 10", among others.

He was also active as a playwright and translator.

Actress Muriel Bats presented her very first monologue in 2019. "Ik geef niet op!" ("I Won't Give Up!") penned by Guy Bernaert. It was the writer and screenwriter's final wish to have the play performed after his death. Guy fell ill while working on "Ik geef niet op!". However, he did complete the piece. With this monologue, he highlighted the precarious situation of foreign domestic workers in Belgium. A piece with a social focus like this was in keeping with Guy's previous work; "Leven in een krabbenmand" centered on poverty in Flanders, and that monologue was performed more than two hundred times.

With proponents of free love, it is usually the case that they are far less enthusiastic about it as soon as a 'child' gets involved.

Two months after their wedding day, their first child was born. "Yes," the man said to his friends, "when we got married, it was retroactive."

It is claimed that without the discovery of fire, any form of civilization is impossible. Right, we have fire. So when does civilization begin?
