Al Chang is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker from Koreatown, working as a writer, director, and editor. His work is driven by a commitment to authentic, character-focused storytelling shaped by lived experience. Before filmmaking, Chang’s background included time as a hip-hop artist, work as a paralegal in entertainment law, and 10 years of service in the U.S. Army.
Chang earned his Master of Fine Arts in Film Production with an emphasis in Editing from Chapman University in May 2025. His path into directing grew out of editing, where a deep interest in structure and performance led him to write and direct his own short films.
Through his independent production company, 4lcfilm, Chang has completed multiple short films across a range of genres, including crime drama, comedy, thriller, and character-driven drama. His projects have screened at festivals nationwide, including Oscar-qualifying festivals, and reflect his belief in making entertaining, honest stories with emotional weight.
Chang’s military background continues to shape his approach to filmmaking, emphasizing discipline, collaboration, and resourcefulness. Whether editing, writing, or directing, his goal remains simple: to tell engaging stories rooted in community, experience, and truth.
