John Rubin's stint as Executive Producer at HHMI Tangled Bank Studios was bookended by Emmy wins for Outstanding Science and Technology Documentary. In 2025, he won for the richly animated feature doc, Hunt for the Oldest DNA, and in 2018, for The Farthest, a feature doc about the epic Voyager space mission. Rubin has won three other Emmys as well as a Peabody in 2008 for Ape Genius, a film that searches for a cognitive line between humans and other great apes. Earlier in his career, he wrote, produced, and directed films for the flagship PBS series Nature, American Experience, and NOVA, while also making several films for National Geographic Explorer. Now an independent filmmaker, Rubin has a Ph.D. in cognitive science from MIT.
