Di Lorenzo grew up in Germany and Italy and attended high school in Hanover, where he graduated from high school in 1979. In the same year he joined the "Hannoversche Neue Presse", where he worked for the culture, television and entertainment department until 1981. Di Lorenzo then began studying communication and political science as well as modern history at the University of Munich in 1981, which he completed with a master's degree in 1987. The final thesis on the development of private television in Italy using Silvio Berlusconi's media company as an example was rated "very good". During his studies, however, di Lorenzo began working for television and print media, as he had already made a name for himself by documenting the life story of a right-wing radical ("Stefan, 22, German right-wing terrorist", 1984). From 1984 to 1987 he moderated the youth program "Live from Alabama" for Bayerischer Rundfunk.
From 1985 to 1986 he worked as a consultant on the redesign of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and the "Münchner Stadtanzeiger". After completing his studies, di Lorenzo initially wrote about domestic political issues as a political reporter for the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" from 1987 to 1994. He also continued to work on television: in 1988 and 1989 he moderated the ARD cultural report live from the Munich Film Festival. From 1988 to 1989, di Lorenzo also appeared in the TV series "Letters from Italy". Since 1989, di Lorenzo became known to a wider television audience through his moderation of the NDR talk show "III nach nine" for Radio Bremen, which he has since performed with other partners. In the years 1989 to 1990, the journalist was also given a teaching position at the University of Munich. In 1994, di Lorenzo took over the management of the reporting department "Die Seiten Drei" for the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", which he held until 1998. In 1998 he presented the SZ magazine on the private television channel Vox.
In 1999, di Lorenzo was appointed editor-in-chief of the Berlin daily newspaper "Der Tagesspiegel". In this role, he faced the tough competition on the Berlin newspaper market by comprehensively restructuring the paper's content. In 2000, "Der Tagesspiegel" recorded a continuous increase in circulation. Di Lorenzo extended his contract as editor-in-chief early until the end of 2003. In mid-August 2004, di Lorenzo moved to the Hamburg weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" as editor-in-chief, but he will remain associated with the "Tagesspiegel" as co-editor in the future. The journalist will also continue to moderate "III after nine" once a month. Di Lorenzo was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize in Silver and the Theodor Wolff Prize as well as the Bambi. In 2001 he was awarded the "European Press Prize" by the Italian state television RAI. In July 2005, the "Zeit" editor received the Italian journalism prize Premio Ischia.
He was also voted Man of the Year in the "Media and Media" category by the Frankfurt trade magazine "Horizont". The unmarried Giovanni di Lorenzo settled in Berlin. In addition to Italian citizenship, he also received German citizenship in 2004. In 2009 he received the Julius Hirsch Prize jury's honorary award.
