The founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were Ronnie Van Zant - vocals, Gary Rossington - guitar, Bob Burns - drums. Allen Collins - guitar, & Larry Junstrom - bass, joined shortly thereafter.
- A character in the supernatural thriller The Coffin (2008) refers to a person as Ol' Man Wilkeson. This is in honor of Leon. The writer of the script is a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.
- After Wilkinson's death Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded a song Mad Hatter as a tribute to him.
