He was a close friend of actress Hattie Jacques, and was portrayed by Jay Simpson in the drama Hattie (2011), based on her life.

He served as a commando during World War II and later went on to become a restaurateur in the theatre industry. During the 1960s he ran the Establishment club in Soho, where he befriended many celebrities of the time.
