- Formerly a crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, where he was a colleague of David Simon, later the creator of both the TV shows "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "The Wire." Author of several books on Baltimore and its history.
- Currently (2004) working on a documentary film project about rosaries transported across the country and the stories related to them. Active in promoting new writers, he sponsors an annual short story contest.
