The professional partnership began when she worked as an assistant to costume designer, Richard Hornung, on the Coens' film The Hudsucker Proxy (1994). When Hornung, who was suffering from AIDS, became too ill to work on Fargo (1996), she was asked to replace him. She has designed costumes for almost every Coen brothers' film since, including Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), The Ladykillers (2004), No Country for Old Men (2007), Burn After Reading (2008), A Serious Man (2009), True Grit (2010), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and Hail, Caesar! (2016).
  • Mary Zophres was nominated for a 2019 Academy Award in the Best Costume Design category for her work on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) but lost to Ruth E. Carter for Black Panther (2018).
