Biography

Vladimir Zhirinovskiy is a Russian political figure. Founder and chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR). Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly. Russian presidential candidate in 1991, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018. Doctor of Philosophy.

From 1964 to 1970, Zhirinovskiy studied at the Institute of Oriental Languages at Lomonosov Moscow State Universite (since 1972, the Institute of Asian and African Countries), specializing in Turkish Language and Literature.From 1965 to 1967, he studied at the University of Marxism-Leninism, in the Faculty of International Relations. As a fourth-year student, Vladimir Zhirinovskiy was sent to Turkey for pre-graduation practical training as a translator intern in Iskenderun, where the Iskenderun Iron and Steel Works was being built with Soviet assistance. After graduating from the institute, he served as a conscript officer in the political department of the Transcaucasian Military District headquarters in Tbilisi from 1970 to 1972. Military rank: reserve colonel. From 1972 to 1977, he studied evening classes at the Law Faculty of Moscow State University.

In May 1988, he attended the founding congress of the Democratic Union, led by Valeriya Novodvorskaya. This marked Zhirinovskiy's political debut. He gave a speech at the congress and was elected to the Central Coordinating Council, but soon announced his resignation from the party.
