Israel Zangwill

Founder of the Jewish Territorial Organization.
Worked to help Jews trying to escape persecution in Czarist Russia.
Was considered by some as one, if not the greatest commentator on Jewish life of his day.
His wife, feminist author Edith Ayrton Zangwill (1875-1945), was the daughter of British physicists Hertha (1854-1923) and William Edward Ayrton (1847-1908). His son, Ayrton Israel Zangwill (1906-1985), was a metallurgical engineer. Another son, Oliver Louis Zangwill (1913-1987), was a noted British neuropsychologist.
Was an early champion of women suffrage.
Began as a school teacher in the East End of London.
His first play "The Children of the Ghetto" was written in 1892.
Founder and editor of the literary journal Ariel and The London Puck.
